Michael Moore and Wesley Clark are frauds

I generally try to be nice to people I disagree with. For example, I can respect and like Howard Dean, as much I disagree with him on important issues, because he's honest about what he believes, and is basically a good guy.

But here's an article Michael Moore wrote in 1999 condemning the U.S. war in Kosovo. Meanwhile, he's endorsing Wesley Clark, the general who ran that war, for president.

And Wesley Clark, who claims to be against the invasion of Iraq, wrote, on April 10, 2003 (the day after Baghdad was liberated):

Liberation is at hand. Liberation — the powerful balm that justifies painful sacrifice, erases lingering doubt and reinforces bold actions.

...

President Bush and Tony Blair should be proud of their resolve in the face of so much doubt.

They're both frauds.

Dean's Roar

I was watching live when Howard Dean made his "concession speech" in Iowa. I was a bit turned off by it. I wasn't sure if that's how he sounds when he shouts, or if his voice was just hoarse from talking too much the previous couple of days (turns out he had a cold). The listing of the states was dumb, too.

But I've gotta say, there's been a huge overreaction. I found the presentation of that speech slightly unappealing, but I really have no comprehension of people who have stopped supporting him as a result of it. What should be important to people is what someone has to say, and not (within reasonable limits) how they say it. Enthusiastic yelling shouldn't lose millions of votes.

State of the Union

Speaking of Bush's persuasive ability: Bush has gotten much better at delivering prepared speeches. I thought the State of the Union made his strongest defense yet of the War on Terrorism. Overall, the speech was very good up until he finished talking about taxes.

It went downhill from there. It pains me that there's not a single candidate from any party that understands the war like he does (Lieberman is the best, but still not as good). Granted, Bush would be a better president than the Democratic candidates on most other issues besides that too, but thanks to Islamic militants, there's not even a serious competition. It would be nice to vote for a Libertarian, but the Libertarian Party is living in a fantasy world when it comes to terrorism.

Given how absolutely vital proper guidance in the War on Terrorism is, it looks like I won't have much of a choice in November.

Clinton

This article expresses a sentiment I've been feeling about Bill Clinton lately, after watching several of his recent speeches, that he's a damn good communicator. I wasn't paying enough attention during his presidency to say whether overall I would have liked him. I know I probably would have disagreed with much of his actions. But when he's giving a speech, he sure makes it hard to disagree with most of what he says.

I wish persuading people came as naturally for Bush.

9/11 a fluke?

Someone said to me yesterday: "There haven't been any terrorist attacks on U.S. soil since 9/11. Could it be that 9/11 was a fluke and that our administration has completely overreacted to it?"

Of course, it could just as easily be said that the Administration's reaction to 9/11 is what has caused 9/11 to be a fluke. Terrorism is not like a natural disaster—it doesn't come and go in relatively uncontrollable and unpredictable bursts. There are creative, intelligent human beings dedicating their lives to finding ways to kill us, and the unstoppable advancement of technology will only make that easier, if we're not vigilant.

I hope 9/11 will remain a fluke. But that's up to us.
